86 Blocks Named for Norway's 22nd Licensing Round

change text size

Norway's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy announced Tuesday its 22nd licensing round for the Norwegian shelf.

The latest round consists of 86 blocks, and parts of blocks. 14 of these are in the Norwegian Sea and 72 in the Barents Sea.

In January, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reported that the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy had received nominations from 37 companies for blocks that companies believes should be included in the 22nd licensing round. 228 blocks, or parts of blocks, were nominated, of which 107 were nominated by two or more companies.

The application deadline is December 4, 2012, and the Norwegian government intends to award new production licenses before summer 2013.

"The interest in exploring in the Barents Sea has increased considerably after Statoil and the [license] partners found oil and gas on “Skrugard” (7220/8-1) in 2011. More exploration is now taking place throughout the southern Barents Sea, and there is renewed optimism and expectation of discoveries. This licensing round will contribute to maintaining the activity level in this area and to clarifying the resource potential in the Barents Sea," said Sissel Eriksen, exploration director at the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, in a statement.
