Australia's AWE Abandons Atlas-1 Well

change text size

Australia's AWE reported Tuesday that it plans to plug and abandon its Atlas-1 exploration well – located offshore East Java Basin, Indonesia – due to a high percentage of carbon dioxide.

The well is sited within the Titan Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in the East Java Basin. Its location is 22 miles (35 kilometers) north east of the Lengo gas discovery, which tested gas at rates of up to 12.8 million cubic feet per day when drilled in 2008.

AWE was targeting a carbonate reservoir sequence that, together with the nearby Lengo gas discovery, was thought might contain up to one trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. On June 7, 2012 AWE announced that it had drilled the well to 2,011 feet (613 meters), and that indications of both methane and carbon dioxide had been detected within the upper part of the Kujung carbonate reservoir section.

AWE is the operator of the well, and owns a 40-percent stake in the Titan PSC project. Baruna Oil and Gas and Mitra Energy each hold a 25-percent stake, while PT. Sillo Maritime Perdana holds the remaining interest of 10 percent.

AWE has oil and gas interests in several locations around the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Yemen and the US.
