Britain Offers Support to Oil Companies in Falklands

LONDON - Britain said it would support its oil companies involved in the "legitimate" business of oil exploration off the Falkland Islands after Argentina said Monday it had begun the process of suing them.

Buenos Aires declared British oil exploration off the Falklands "illegal" and immediately set about suing five companies for pursuing activities around the contested islands.

Britain said the moves were the "latest attempts to damage the economic livelihoods" of the islands and said it would work with any company potentially affected to help them deal with the practical implications.

"From harassing Falklands shipping to threatening the islanders' air links with Chile, Argentina's efforts to intimidate the Falklands are illegal, unbecoming and wholly counter-productive," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.
