Total Spuds Relief Well, Preps Well Kill

LONDON - Total SA said Wednesday that a team of 11 engineers flew to its stricken Elgin North Sea platform earlier this morning to conduct further preparations for work needed to end an ongoing natural gas leak.

"A team of 11 landed on Elgin at 11.53 hours today as preparatory work continues for well kill," tweeted Total.

The group, which was forced to evacuate and power down its facility off the east coast of Scotland nearly four weeks ago, after an abandoned well started spewing gas and condensate onto a drilling platform, is engaged in two parallel operations to halt the leak.

In addition to the preparatory steps to conduct a so-called "well kill" operation onboard, Total has also begun drilling one of two planned relief wells.
