Total Team Returns from Elgin with Key Information

Helicopter Takes Specialized Team to Total's Elgin Platform

A specialized team on a reconnaissance mission returned safely Thursday said French oil major Total. The 8-worker crew provided key information on stemming the leak on the Elgin platform, where a gas leak occurred on March 25.

A helicopter departed from Aberdeen at 10:30 a.m. UK time to "carry out a preliminary survey of the leak area, establish zones which can be safely accessed and gather data on the G4 well," said Total in a statement earlier Thursday.

Over the weekend, Total said that the flare on the Elgin platform had gone out, while reports on Monday indicated that it had been discussing with the UK's Health and Safety Executive a plan to re-board the platform.

The firm has also contracted specialized crews from Wild Well Control – which helped tackle the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon accident.
