Report: Petrobras Notifies Regulator of Two Offshore Oil Leaks
RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, reported two offshore oil leaks to environmental regulator Ibama in recent days, the local O Globo newspaper reported on its Web site late Monday.
According to the report, Petrobras reported Friday that an underwater pipeline connecting the Atum 2 and Xareu 3 platforms off the coast of Ceara state in Brazil's northeast leaked an undisclosed volume of oil into the Atlantic Ocean. Petrobras halted production at Atum, depressurized the pipeline and dispatched ships to the area to disperse an oil sheen, O Globo reported.
The second incident occurred Monday in the Santos Basin off the coasts of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo states, where 10 liters of oily water leaked from the "Cidade de Santos" floating production, storage and offloading vessel operated by Modec, O Globo reported. The leak caused a 10-square-meter oil slick. The "Cidade de Santos" is installed at the Urugua and Tambau fields.
Petrobras and Ibama officials were not immediately available to comment on the report.
