Job Description:

Primary responsibilities:

This position involves the mechanical design, development and sustaining of NOV's data acquisition, instrumentation and control systems used in drilling operations within the oil and gas industry. The individual will provide mechanical engineering expertise to evaluate, develop, document, validate, and implement new designs, as well as execute improvements and enhancements of existing products and systems. The individual will work collaboratively with other mechanical and electrical engineers, designer/drafters, technicians and additional support personnel in the design of new products, as well as the extension and evolution of current systems. The engineer will occasionally interact with other functional groups such as Product Line Managers (PLM), Manufacturing, Supply chain, Field Engineering, Sales, and Rental teams during design development cycles to gain critical knowledge and understanding of product requirements. This work is done within the framework of the engineering document control system and is performed in a collaborative environment. Prior experience with outdoor and harsh environment domains is highly desirable. Leadership and teamwork characteristics must be demonstrated. A consistent pattern of timely delivery is critical to this role.

Essential Duties:

· Contribute to the architectural definition of new product designs and extensions

· Perform requirements analysis and create engineering specifications

· Develop rapid prototypes as necessary to aid in feasibility and scoping

· Accurately estimate individual work efforts and support overall project planning

· Derive a risk management process for the project, including a risk analysis and mitigation plan

· Develop and evaluate proposed new designs using experience and rigorous engineering evaluation and analysis

· Hold design reviews and FMEAs

· Create test plans, then execute and support lab, functional, environmental and field test efforts in order to validate the design

· Determine the root cause of product design problems using the scientific method

· Document new designs and changes using Pro-E and AutoCAD, then release designs to the engineering document control system

· Aid Technical Publications and Training in creation of product collateral materials

· Participate in product commercialization efforts including supplier selection, test development and process support

· Support early sustaining of new products

· Complete all responsibilities in a timely and professional manner while maintaining quality

· Perform other duties as required by management

Desired Skills:

Min Requirements:

· BS Degree or better in Mechanical Engineering

· Minimum 5 years' experience in new product design, development and sustainment, including the designing and documenting of products at the detail, assembly, and system levels using typical CAD and document management tools and processes

· Solid reasoning and problem solving skill required

· Ability to contribute to the architectural definition of new products

· Excellent written as well as verbal communication skills

· Strong organizational and time management skills

· Ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with others as a team

· Demonstrated commitment to quality and professionalism

Desired skillsets:

· Prior experience in electro-mechanical component specification, packaging of electronic systems for harsh/outdoor environments, and system integration is required

· Experience with PTC Mechanica or Solidworks structural analysis software and MathCAD or other is required

· Flow/Thermal Analysis experience with CFDesign or similar is highly desired

· Experience in design for manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, castings, welding and assembly

· Proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Pro-E or Solid works, Microsoft Word and Excel

· Design for EMC/EMI compliance

· Knowledge of oilfield equipment, materials, processes and specifications desired

· Knowledge of industry utilized design standards - ANSI, ISO, etc.

· Hazardous area safety, especially intrinsically safe design concepts

· Proficient in the project management of complex problems and projects

· Engineering document control systems (Teamcenter a plus)

· Quality processes and systems

· Designing systems for ruggedized environments. Prior experience in engineering in the Oil and Gas industry would be extremely beneficial.
