Job Description:

Primary responsibilities:

This position involves the electrical design, development and sustaining of NOV's data acquisition, instrumentation and control systems used in drilling operations within the oil and gas industry. The proper candidate will have responsibility for and must have experience in mixed signal PCB design and embedded system development and troubleshooting. Prior experience in the design of electronics for the extreme environmental conditions of downhole oil and gas tools, e.g. MWD, is required. This position is responsible for development and sustaining of NOV's suite of survey tools - e-Totco®, FloDriftTM, and FloSurveyTM.

The individual will work with other electrical and mechanical engineers and technicians in the design of new products, as well as the extension, evolution and sustaining of existing systems. This work is done within the framework of the engineering document control system and is performed in a collaborative environment. Leadership and teamwork characteristics must be demonstrated. A consistent pattern of timely delivery is critical to this role.

Essential Duties:

  • Contribute to the architectural definition of new product designs and extensions
  • Perform requirements analysis and create engineering specifications
  • Develop rapid prototypes as necessary to aid in feasibility and scoping
  • Accurately estimate individual work efforts and support overall project planning
  • Derive a risk management process for the project, including a risk analysis and mitigation plan
  • Hold design reviews and FMEAs
  • Develop and test circuits, PCBA's and systems
  • Create test plans, then execute and support lab, functional, environmental and field test efforts
  • Release designs to the engineering document control system
  • Participate in product commercialization efforts including supplier selection, test development and process support
  • Support early sustaining of new products
  • Complete all responsibilities in a timely and professional manner while maintaining quality
  • Perform other duties as required by management

Min Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (Masters Degree preferred)
  • 5 years minimum mixed signal electronics design experience
  • 5 years minimum embedded system design experience
  • 3 years minimum downhole electronics design experience
  • Solid reasoning and problem solving skill required
  • Ability to contribute to the architectural definition of new products
  • Excellent written as well as verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with others as a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and professionalism

Desired skillsets:

  • Instrumentation and sensor systems; solid state sensor technologies
  • PIC microcontroller based design experience
  • Analog and mixed signal design with instrumentation theory focus
  • Switching regulator design
  • Communications: Inter and intra-circuit serial protocols
  • Firmware and real-time programming
  • ECAD: Altium and/or PADS (or similar)
  • Experience with lab equipment: scopes, meters, data loggers, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers
  • PCB manufacturing and assembly processes; experience in designing for manufacture and test
  • Reliability and HALT testing for harsh environments
  • Engineering document control systems (Teamcenter a plus)
