The Fire Protection engineer provides technical guidance and support to BP's upstream business worldwide. The Process & Process Safety Engineering team, with resources based in Sunbury, Aberdeen and Houston hosts subject matter experts in process engineering and process safety engineering. This includes expertise in fire protection, Hazop, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), major accident risk assessment as well as fire and blast modelling.
The role of this team's engineers is to provide expert consultancy, to prepare and maintain company practices, to drive continuous improvement in design and operations, to provide coaching and development through training courses and to participate in Industry and other external commitments. Based within a team of subject matter experts and working on a diverse mix of work for production and developments divisions, this job offers an excellent opportunity to develop as an engineer, build a worldwide network inside and outside UEC, and obtain experience in BP's global interests within projects and operations.
We are seeking a fire protection engineer to join our team in Sunbury or Houston.
o Maintain specialist expertise that supports the Business Units and projects in the understanding, assessment and active management of major accident hazards and risks.
o Provide technical support and guidance on the use and need for passive fire protection.
o Provide technical support and guidance on active fixed fire systems (water, foam, gaseous: supply, pumps, distribution, application devices, hydraulic analysis, testing)
o Provide technical support and guidance on design of gas/smoke/flame detection and alarm systems.
o Perform (or review) fire hazard analysis studies in accordance with GP24-21.
o Assist with updates to relevant Engineering Technical Practices
o Maintain awareness of technology developments relating to fire protection
o Guide BP and contractor engineers in the need for and value of risk management by personal mentoring and delivery of training in fire safety engineering.
o Participate in recruitment, coaching and mentoring activities
o Represent the company at industry, regulatory, national and/or international level when needed.
o Review fire protection work and deliverables from engineering contractors and consultants.
o Maintain working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations relevant to process safety in general and fire protection in particular
o Participate in recruitment, coaching and mentoring activities.
o Represent the company at industry, regulatory, national and/or international level when requested
o BS (US), BEng (UK) in an engineering or scientific discipline
o Professional Engineer (US) or Chartered Engineer (UK) or equivalent
o Knowledge of upstream oil and gas production and treatment facilities both onshore and offshore.
o Specialist knowledge of fire safety engineering as applied to the energy industry. In particular passive and active fire protection systems
o Knowledge of process safety regulatory requirements and industry standards
o Excellent communication and planning skills
o Self-motivated with a willingness to learn from others and work with minimum direction
