 PURPOSE:
Summarize briefly the major function and purpose of the position.
This position functions as overall support for the turning and milling application (both manual and computer driven) needs for the Machine Shop. Support includes proven ability to operate the equipment and controls at a high level of proficiency and fulfilling job requirements of Machinist I-V. Provides guidance to machinist I-V.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
What are the minimum qualifications an employee must have in order to perform the duties of the position? (I.e. educational requirements, licenses, certification, work experience, training etc.)
Meets all the requirements of a Machinist V. Fifteen years machining experience with at least six years in a similar environment and/or four years in-house experience. Must demonstrate ability to interpret complicated drawings with multiple views and machining surfaces. Must be proficient at running Horizontal Boring Machines and Lathes to complete a part without supervision. Must be able to run all manual machines for tooling through design and fabrication of tools or fixtures. Must understand and practice geometric tolerance. Must be proficient with gages and measuring instruments used. Must be able to suggest better ways to perform the same function. Must be able to use all ITS tooling without supervision. Must be able to problem solve any issue relating to machining or tooling. Ability to use a personal computer to retrieve and process necessary information to and from machine control and perform program edits as required. Forklift and crane operation experience and certification required. Must have passed all classroom and hands-on training.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
What training will an employee need to perform the duties of the position?
Houston Operating Procedures. START Safety Program, Material Handling Equipment Certification. Product Training. CNC Programming. Training to use more advanced testing and measurement equipment. May perform more advanced functions as part of training and development.
RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Indicate positions that report directly to this position. Number of direct / indirect reports.
- No direct reports, but usually assists with orientation, training and checking work of less experienced staff. May serve as a lead.
- Indicate internal/external contacts and purpose of contacts.
- Interfaces with all functional areas to troubleshoot, communicate, and recommend resolution to complex problems
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Indicate budget/revenue responsibility.
- None at this level.
- Explain the degree of supervision/guidance, procedures/ processes used, judgement, creativity, planning & resourcefulness needed to do the job.
- Works independently using advanced specialized skills. Must adhere to production schedule. Independently troubleshoots problems and recommends solution to others. Most of work is not subject to direct check. Must meet the criteria of machinist IV.

Spends 100% of time in the shop. Exposed to possible shop hazards, which may include high noise heavy equipment for over 50 pounds. Must have vision correctable to 20 - 20.
