Compressed Work Schedule

This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 15 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.


Position Overview

The Health, Safety & Environment - Training Specialist's key role is to facilitate the stewardship of company Health Safety and Environment knowledge and skills. The HSE - Training Specialist will be accountable for content management, knowledge presentation, and compliance review of the Gulf of Mexico Division Safe Work Practices in support of all components of 30 CFR 250, Subpart S. They will have strong knowledge of Health Safety & Environmental issues and possess technical abilities at a level sufficient to work under minimal supervision, and will serve as subject matter expert. They are also responsible for addressing and developing solutions to HSE issues and impacts.

Office location is in Houston, Texas.


Job Duties/Responsibilities




  • Manage delivery of HSE L&D products and services to the Nexen U.S. Division internal customers - managers, supervisors and employees, in accordance with Nexen company plans, policies and practices;


  • Develop and implement the Offshore SEMS L&D strategy, in alignment with the Nexen people management agenda;


  • Build the Offshore SEMS Safe work practices (HSE) profile in areas of compliance, capability, and development;


  • Ensure Safety Essentials for Supervisors and Managers (SEFSAM) program is compliant with SEMS elements and programs;


  • Design and coordinate internal or external resources cross-functional HSE L&D programs and events for Gulf of Mexico offshore operations personnel in both production and drilling activities;


  • Contribute to the review, design, upgrade, and implementation of the key online and offline HSE L&D management systems and programs;


  • Establish network of internal and external people management services, and monitor quality of delivery;


  • Ensure development of all relevant HSE training materials documentation and new training modules for electronic distribution;


  • Ensure the evaluation of training and training-needs analysis are complete;


  • Deliver professional HSE L&D support and services in line with organization infrastructure, functional directives, tools, and methodologies. May work with training delivery databases such as myGPS, Active Learner, and ISNetworld training manager;


  • Participate in and represent Nexen at industry SEMS initiatives such as Center for Offshore Safety, etc.;


  • Design, coordinate, and resource cross-functional HSE&SR/SEMS documents in support of programs and events;


  • Contribute to the review, design, upgrade, and implementation of the key online and offline HSE&SR management systems;


  • Maintain network of internal and external people management HSE&SR document supplier services, and monitors quality of delivery;


  • Deliver professional HSE&SR/SEMS support and services in line with organization infrastructure, functional directives, tools, and methodologies;


  • Provide HSE&SR support for operational events such as drilling, construction, and other projects;


  • Liaise/network with the external Nexen business and HSE&SR infrastructure, as well as professional HSE&SR bodies and associations;


  • Support the Nexen HSE&SR programs and policies.




Required Skills:

Education/Experience




  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in field of Safety, Health or Environment, or related science/engineering discipline;


  • At least 10 years of experience in the E&P industry;


  • HSE and/or operational experience preferred;


  • Must have experience with offshore BOEM, BSEE, USCG, and EPA regulations;


  • Experience in supporting Gulf of Mexico production facility and/or offshore deepwater drilling operations, with production and projects exposure is an asset;


  • Knowledge of process and systems to support SEMS delivery, including reporting and metrics;


  • Understanding of API RP75 and/or CFR 250 Subpart S and/or OSHA 1910.119 and how to apply within an organization;


  • Self-motivated team player, with a proven ability to work with diverse individuals, from floor hands to engineering managers;


  • Effective relationship-builder at all levels, both internally and externally;


  • External supplier management skills and commercial experience in upstream oil & gas (offshore) industrial context also required;


  • Competent user of key software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
