Comp Work Statement

This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 40 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.


Position Overview

As Manager of Strategic Procurement, act as key contact with major projects supply community, while internally providing functional procurement leadership to the project teams and procurement staff.


Job Duties/Responsibilities




  • Development and implementation of management approved procurement strategies for Major Projects;


  • Ongoing interface and contact with Major Projects' key suppliers, including acquisition of forward-looking supply trends and risks;


  • Review/understand project schedules, stage gated project processes, and how procurement planning and execution need to be addressed;


  • Continually identify risks associated with procurement of equipment and materials, and assist with development of mitigation plans to manage same;


  • Lead and/or develop the creation and execution of long term supply agreements, blanket orders, and preferred supplier agreements;


  • Develop and implement effective supplier performance and overall relationship management programs with key suppliers, coordinating with required internal Major Projects stakeholders;


  • Develop, implement, communicate, train, maintain, and update Major Projects procurement standards and procedures as they apply to Major Project procurement activities (both self-performed and by third parties);


  • Plan, recruit, staff, lead, and mentor procurement staff required to support Major Projects.




Required Skills:

Education/Experience

Project/Discipline Experience:




  • Minimum 20 years of Oil and Gas or similar previous major project experience;


  • Post-secondary degree in commerce, business, or engineering an asset;


  • Effective leadership of large procurement and/or supply chain organizations (either directly or through owner oversight of EP companies procuring as agent for owner);


  • Experience with a variety of supply chain/procurement strategies in capital project setting:


    • Actual hands on development;


    • Obtaining senior management approval;


    • Implementation of procurement strategies and long term supply agreements;


    • Implementation of supplier relationship programs;




  • Solid technical knowledge of equipment/materials being purchased;


  • Working knowledge of the legal aspects of procurement and Canadian tender law;


  • Experience in the formation of large, complex commercial negotiations and agreements;


  • Experience with supplier claims;


  • Extensive knowledge and experience with the arbitration/litigation process is an asset.
