Compressed Work Schedule

This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 40 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.


Position Overview

The Senior Staff Advisor Ready For Operations, reporting to the RFO Services Manager will have responsibility for the delivery of business processes related to new plant operations readiness within Synthetic Oil. As a representative of the Manager - Maintenance, the incumbent will ensure that the practices and processes of Maintenance Excellence (ME) are delivered for all projects that the Major Projects group executes.

The Senior Staff Advisor will bring senior leadership (as a recognize expert in the field) to the RFO execution teams acting as advisor; taking initiative, and making independent decisions in the development of detailed practices for RFO execution from a common vision.

Having significant experience at a senior level, including the management of multi-trade maintenance organizations s/he supports additional Operations needs as required (e.g. SWSS, ESCS, TASP). Ensures that the RFO practices are consistent with the Synthetic Oil operations plans.


Job Duties/Responsibilities




  • Develop core RFO (Functional) Processes and Procedures, interfacing with Major projects functional groups and Operations to ensure alignment;


  • Ensure Operations considerations and requirements are established early in the project cycle and incorporated into contracting strategies, facility design, and organizational readiness;


  • Ensure that all current and new business process within RFO are consistent with Long Lake site practice by maintaining and fostering relationships within the operating organization;


  • Identify and champion opportunities to improve the delivery of ME within Major projects;


  • Within scope, engage consultants/contractors to provide specific elements of program design;


  • Serve as a technical expert in the areas of Maintenance Operations and design;


  • Engage Long Lake resources as required in the development of RFO scope;


  • Complete audits of project team RFO activities related to production readiness;


  • Ensure that RFO processes and procedures are utilized by Major Projects in the delivery of facilities;


  • Provide reports to Senior Project Management regarding readiness;


  • Mentor RFO execution staff throughout the project process;


  • Act as the primary contact for Major projects functional groups regarding the design of standards and processes, and engage appropriate resources as required to support these functional groups;


  • Liaise with external agencies as required in the development of business processes;


  • Participate as technical authority when required during the execution phase of major projects;


  • Responsible for early stage staffing of execution teams;


  • Lead hiring teams and support project leadership in hiring of RFO resources.


  • Maintain close contact with site leadership and ensure engagement/alignment with their needs;


  • Plan and schedule resources in order to support the execution teams;


  • Stewardship of the lessons learned process for maintenance aspects of projects, including maintaining knowledge of other projects in the region.




Required Skills:

Education/Experience




  • Trade Designation;


  • PMP designation would be an asset;


  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the design, maintenance, and operations of large petrochemical or chemical processes;


  • Direct experience in the management of shift organizations and maintenance staff;


  • At least 5 years at a senior leadership level;


  • Strong leadership and communications skills;


  • Experience in communicating/negotiating with Regulatory Agencies (i.e. ABSA, AENV, ERCB);


  • Experience in the development of complex system and or processes;


  • Specific knowledge of both SAGD and Upgrading equipment and maintenance practices.
