Department Overview:
Responsible for addressing legislative and regulatory issues that affect TEUSA, advising the organization's Executives on the impact of proposed legislation and developing strategies for consideration by Executives at the company's U.S. shale headquarters and global corporate office. In this capacity, the Director of Government Relations will lead the Company's activities to shape public policies, ensure a highly effective and efficient operation of the government relations team, and develop, implement, and manage government strategies.
Responsibilities:
U.S. Government Relations
- Develop, align and implement government affairs strategy within the Corporate Affairs function
- Promote and engage in effective two-way dialogue, understanding and communication with TEUSA staff and government staff and elected officials throughout NAO jurisdictions
- Foster and enhance the organization's image among authorities
- Provide exposure for TEUSA activities and build relationships through proactive monitoring of key issues and potential changes to legislation/regulations that may impact the company
- Identify emerging policy/political issues to foresee business opportunities and mitigate potential business risks
- Develops and maintains relationships with U.S. legislators, committees, agencies, commissioners and local stakeholders to liaison and represent U.S. Shale organization before U.S. legislative and regulatory bodies
- Identify public policy needs, develop positions on public policies and strategies for influencing the policy debate, and inform affected business units of public policy decisions.
- Seek guidance from and provide information to senior management on issues within TEUSA related to business interests, help to ensure the success of new business ventures, and assist with the attainment of corporate goals
- Work closely with corporate communications to ensure consistency of message and alignment of strategic goals
Coordination with Calgary
- Information sharing and project coordination between the business and Calgary on initiatives covering government relations and other information to assist corporate functions in Calgary. Providing input into the U.S. CA strategy and implementing the local in country CA strategy
Industry group development/leader:
- Coordinate and ensure effective representation industry associations (e.g., MSC, ANGA, API, etc.). This position may serve as the company's representative with these groups.
- Encourage and assist in building broad stakeholder coalitions to advance public policy goals.
- Interacts with industry associations to deliver joint stakeholder and regulatory strategies:

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required, JD or post-graduate work preferred;
- 8 - 10 years of progressive related work experience including at least 5 years of upper level management experience in a highly relationship / influence oriented environment;
- Previous experience managing relationships with lobbyists and consultants, as well as media relations experience to help shape positive media coverage and public opinion is also preferred
- Knowledge of oil and gas/energy industry;
- Legal, regulatory exposure in the energy industry;
- U.S Government relations exposure/experience;
- Strong background in shaping public policy essential;
- A thorough understanding of legislative processes, proven track record of successful advocacy and winning legislative battles;
- Demonstrated history of effective oral and written communication skills is required.
