Department Overview:
A key member of Talisman's global communications team, the Director of U.S. Communications will proactively develop and implement communications strategies that drive the achievement of the company's business objectives in the U.S. market. The role is responsibility for both internal and external communications, including media relations, crisis communications, employee, leader & contractor communications, brand management and web communications.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the U.S. communications function to effectively position and promote the organization, in all U.S. regions/markets
- Lead a team of internal direct reports
- Implement a clear communication strategy for the U.S. region, which is consistent across all lines of business and incorporates all critical external and internal communications components, vehicles and constituencies - staying aligned with both North American-wide and global core messaging in order to enhance and maintain corporate reputation
- Lead the development of all internal and external communications, specific to the U.S., through consultation with company leadership and the Global Communications department in Talisman's head office in Calgary - including, elements such as electronic and print communications with staff, marketing materials, websites and client/community engagement communications
- Act as principal contact for U.S. media relations, including briefing U.S. leadership and senior management for media activity; and approving promotional campaign ideas in various types of media
- Proactively identify communication opportunities in the U.S. market and act on them accordingly (e.g. community events, association meetings, local/regional government forums)
- Manage crisis communications for the U.S. region, using Talisman's global crisis management framework
- Provide input into global communications programs and implement U.S. region components
- Develop metrics and tracking processes to monitor strategy success, including participation in global reputational research, social media monitoring and media content analysis
Qualifications:
- Bachelor and/or Master's degree in Communications, Business or related discipline
- 10 - 15+ years' experience developing communication strategies and executing within a complex organization
- Experience must include strategic planning, communications planning and management, and media relations. Established relationships with business / energy media in the eastern and southern US is a definite asset.
- Progressive advancement within corporate communication roles with 5 - 10+ years of successful people management experience, with ability to act as a trusted advisor to senior management
- Membership and / or accreditation in IABC or PRSA is an asset

- Must demonstrate leadership competencies such as teamwork, creative problem solving, flexibility, and have a results mindset, strong interpersonal skills and be an excellent negotiator
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills are required - written, oral, listening, influencing and coaching
- Master writer / editor with the ability to translate technical concepts into plain, easy-to-understand language for different audiences
- Must possess strong meeting organization a facilitation skills
