Technical Competencies required for success
Technical Competency
Definition
Technical Problem Solving
Suggest and evaluate multiple solutions based on input from multiple sources; Identifies the root problem; Specifies the tests appropriate to expose the problem; Draws conclusions, but occasionally needs confirmation from experts or external sources
Root Cause Analysis and Verification
Examines multiple sources to arrive at the primary cause; Observe defects and traces most to their root causes. Schedules the appropriate tests at various locations; May suggest that a test is needed to verify product performance; Assists in the development of test specifications.
Technical Software/Engineering Systems
Uses engineering systems to move jobs from design-initiation to process-completion with minimal errors; Uses engineering system search tools to perform advanced searches; Effectively and clearly applies design standards and design guidelines in all produced work. Can run advanced analyses using appropriate product, engineering, or scientific related tools, can plot appropriate product, engineering, or scientific related data using systems.
Systems-based Product Design
Effectively communicates product features and design layout recommendations for a variety of applications. Demonstrates clearly how features affect performance in common applications. Demonstrates proficiency in the design of component and sub systems. Aware of requirements and constraints. Drives "Design For Approach" for parts and assemblies with regard to manufacture, assembly, test, transportation, and maintenance, inspection, and HSE effects.
Understanding of Competitive Technology
Easily communicates features and benefits of products in comparison with competitor products used within his/her area of responsibility. Demonstrates a basic knowledge (nomenclature, features, and applications) of competitor's major product lines.
Technical Communication
Creates professional-looking tables and illustrations - Write field test/survey report; Draws professional-looking system diagrams for inclusion in reports; Presents summary consistent with the test results & findings; Develops recommendations consistent with problems, findings and objectives; and writes technical papers for presentations or publications
Intellectual Property Fundamentals
Understands science/engineering and applications. Is creative and has new ideas. Understands reasons for developing patents and trademarks. Able to complete parts of an invention disclosure under supervision.
Reliability
Interprets reliability data for components; Conducts projects to address component reliability issues, fundamental limits of the design, stresses stemming from the mission profile.
