Compressed Work Schedule This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 15 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.
Position Overview The Geological Technician will provide technical support to geologists and geophysicists on varied tasks, and be responsible for supporting Gulf of Mexico Exploration projects through various stages toward completion. Incumbent will also lay out and update complex maps and cross sections; perform preliminary diagnostic work on data, make technical analyses, and report results. May also analyze data from project work and make recommendations.
Job Duties/Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Works with an Exploration team to follow daily operations of deepwater wells; Loads daily drilling information into various geoscience applications such as Openworks, Petra, Petrel and Livelink; Constructs structure maps and cross-sections using various geoscience applications such as Zmap, Petra or Stratworks; Downloads LAS log curve data and loads into the technical application databases (Openworks/Petra/Petrel) in a timely manner. Performs quality control on the log data for accuracy and position to ensure proper loading; maintains a spreadsheet to track new well data release dates; and provides e-mail updates to the G&G community on LAS data loads and new well data releases; Transfers data files between geoscience applications, such as between Openworks and Petrel; Loads paleo data into Access database to standardize paleo bug names and appendages, then exports to file for loading into Petra and Openworks databases; Loads data into Petrel and builds cross-sections; SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Required Skills: Education/Experience
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Geology or closely related discipline or have a minimum of 8 years of related Geological experience; Gulf of Mexico experience is preferred; Strong computer literacy, including the use of personal computers and related software for data management, especially Microsoft Excel, is also required; Should have a working knowledge of computer applications and a strong comprehension of technical concepts; Must have used Landmark applications and have workstation experience. Must have experience using Linux operating systems. Experience with Petrel is also required; Prefer candidate to have some skill in or knowledge of acquiring, assimilating and managing data, computer mapping and solving complex problems involving computer systems and data; Ability to generate maps that are easy to comprehend is also desired, and the ability to perform conventional drafting function would be beneficial; Must be efficient and able to meet deadlines while managing multiple assigned projects, as well as be able to work independently and in a team environment; The following knowledge is preferred: Experience in these oil & gas industry programs: Zmap, Stratworks, PetroWorks, OpenWorks, Neurolog, Neuromap, Petra, Petrel, SDI Montage, OpenSpirit; Experience in these oil & gas industry related products: Lexco (OWL), Intellex, TGS (A2D), MMS Data, PI/Dwights, PaleoDataInc (PDI), Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access; ESRI ArcGIS experience is a plus;
Knowledge of map coordinate systems is required; must be able to verify data accuracy; Experience working with Access databases and Excel spreadsheet functions; Experience using Livelink - loading files, applying metadata to documents and folders, and creating links; Experience preparing PowerPoint slides using standard templates for internal and external reviews; Must be a team player and communicate well with team members and other departments; Must be goal-oriented and demonstrate willingness to learn new tasks and applications; LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
