Job Description:
Nexen Petroleum U.S.A. Position Overview:

Responsible for optimizing and monitoring Nexen operated production including assisting with development and execution of the business plan for the Operated Assets. These assets are mainly offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

Compressed Work Schedule:

This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 15 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Ensures operations follow Nexen health, safety and environmental protection policies and that all HSE and Regulatory goals are understood and performance is measured;
    • Ensures technical excellence in all project design and execution;
    • Understands and adheres to all BSEE, OSHA, USCG, and EPA regulations, and Nexen company policies and procedures;
    • Ensures the execution of SEMS / PSM plans, procedures, and processes, including the reporting of SEMS data and improvements as stated in annual individual performance plans;
    • Works closely with reservoir and facility engineers, regulatory personnel, field superintendents, and operations personnel, supply management, and HSESR to optimize and monitor Nexen-operated offshore fields in the Gulf of Mexico;
    • Reviews production, workover and facility reports daily and coordinates activities for maximum efficiency;
    • Assist in management of all interfaces related to the Production Operations including but not limited to construction, maintenance, well work and R&A activities;
    • Undertakes offshore field trips, as required, to assist with or oversee field operations;
    • Makes recommendations and prepares management of change (MOC) documents for scope changes in operation;
    • Performs initial cost estimates, and supplements if required, cost studies and cost control activities related to production activities.  Controls and administers expenditures for OPEX and projects within budget and in accordance with policies; develops and implements cost-savings measures;
    • Evaluates, compares, and recommends vendors, products, and bids to management bid committee to perform well operations;
    • Gathers and organizes various types of information such as equipment specifications, government regulations, operating agreements, permit approvals, technical publications, guidelines, reports, etc.;
    • Approves invoices through SAP concerning relevant production projects by comparing rates, quantities, specifications for quality and timing and other attributes to related contracts, briefs, rate sheets and other authoritative sources for agreed-upon terms;
    • As necessary may also monitor non-operated production operations.  

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • May provide oversight to other engineers and operations personnel, both Nexen and Contract.

Education/Experience:

    • Position requires a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably Petroleum;
    • A minimum of 10 years of well-rounded experience in onshore and/or offshore Gulf of Mexico production operations, in addition to well optimization, artificial lift, and Nodal analysis;
    • Considerable amount of field experience is essential;
    • Must have experience and expertise working with: down-hole equipment, slick and braided wire line, perforating, running and evaluating cased and open hole logs, coiled tubing, snubbing unit, cementing operations, acidizing operations, gravel packing, frac packing and other sand control techniques;
    • Deepwater subsea well intervention experience would be a plus;
    • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, contractors, and representatives from other departments;
    • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis;
    • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to demonstrate advanced multitasking skills and to handle increased project volume with minimal supervision.  Capable of handling broad scope projects to (1) identify opportunities for profit and loss in a timely manner, (2) facilitate understanding by all other relevant colleagues, and (3) take action to implement their recommendations.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables;
    • OTHER SKILLS: Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel & Outlook.  Working knowledge of SAP and Openwells a plus.  Ability to interface and interact with all company personnel and contract vendors;
    • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Water Survival Training, Safe Gulf Training, and Well Control Certification;
