MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER - SUBSEA SYSTEMS
FMC's subsea systems business encompasses a wide range of equipment and technologies that are required to explore, drill and develop offshore oil and gas fields. We have a strong global presence in all of the world's major basins. Whether it is high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) trees and wellheads, subsea controls and systems or production optimization services, we add value to our customers throughout the life of the field.
FMC is currently seeking mechanical design engineers to plan, conduct and direct Engineering projects, while offering significant contributions to a variety of problems and/or projects.
This engineer will have:
•BS Degree in Engineering. Eight+ years relevant experience or MS degree with six+ years experience.
•Mechanical Design Background
•Expert knowledge of multiple technologies, products and applications. Advanced knowledge of competing and alternative technologies.
•Demonstrated innovative skills to research and create new products/processes using advanced laws, theorems and broad industry knowledge. Recognized as a technical leader among internal and external peers.
•Broad understanding of divisions businesses and internal and external factors affecting business.
•Good organization and project planning skills. Proven leadership ability.
•Demonstrates proficiency in mentoring, thinking creatively and project planning.
•Demonstrated effective customer presentation skills.
The mechanical design engineer has no direct reports, but consistently functions as a technical leader or a significant contributor to a major complex problem and/or project and encourages and empowers others to achieve. He or she evokes the desire in others for stretch and breakthrough and sponsors new project technologies and solicits understanding and support of line managers for major projects. The engineer has strong relationships with major customers to influence purchase decisions made by customer upper management, and is viewed by sales department as key in convincing customer decision-makers of the value of product offerings. The engineer is called upon consistently for external technical advice and speaking engagements, and ensures that development costs, project costs and schedules are met He or she receives direction from manager to set broad objectives, interpret policy issues, develop new concepts and resolve unusual problems. This person uses independent judgment consistently and clearly demonstrates creativity and innovation in finding solutions and alternatives, while developing unique solutions for complex technical problems that may include the design of new systems or the development of solutions having few or no precedents. Potential errors may have major impact on customer relationships, future business, and holdup of production, major expenditures for equipment, material or production.
The Mechanical Design Engineer:
•Consistently leads professionals and/or technicians on a project basis. Ensures that project members understand business goals and creates energy and action toward those goals. Encourages and empowers others to achieve.
•Creates, reviews and approves designs, drawings, DBI?s (database information), specifications, etc. of existing or new technology or applications. Ensures that assignments meet standards and performance requirements within area of expertise.
•Uses the CAD/CAM and database systems and facilities to make layouts, analyze designs, evaluate equipment systems and generate new equipment designs.
•Prepares documentation, information and communications such as ECN (Engineering Change Notices), DBI (Data Base Information) and engineering specifications and ensures conformance to all policies and procedures related to engineering functions, labor reporting and systems reporting.
•Finds creative solutions to multi-faceted and/or time sensitive, complex problems. Identifies and utilizes available technical resources throughout FMC and outside institutions.
•Consults with other departments on equipment designs and questions. Anticipates potential problems and proactively solves complex problems through creative thinking, using internal and external resources.
•Prepares technical data and papers for sales personnel, customers and publications. Makes presentations to customer management groups.
•Teaches / coaches problem solving, creative thinking and project planning skills to less experienced staff. Assists with the development of new professionals.
•Sets objectives for projects. Defines project schedule. Ensures costs and schedules are met.
•Accepts ownership of conceptual designs and regularly sponsors projects to higher management.
•Writes departmental process procedures and policies as required.
•Writes and delivers technical papers for publication. Gives technical advice and participates in external speaking engagements.
