Within Projects & Technology, our Innovation, Research & Development organisation brings the creative talent behind our technologies into one team. It develops differentiating technologies with application in a two- to 20-year time horizon to implement a holistic Group technology strategy. This includes development of GameChanger technologies needed to create new future businesses for the Group. As customers today may not know what they will need in 10 years, we are working to assess potential wants and needs, as well as to evaluate how to best address these.
Responsibilities:
The In-Situ Upgrading Process (IUP) and In-situ Conversion Process (ICP) are proprietary technologies for unlocking significant world-wide heavy oil and oil shale resources. Locations of these resources are reasonably well known and pursuing them is an option to increase our oil portfolio in a world of declining conventional oil discoveries. However, converting an unconventional resource to a reserve position is capital and manpower intensive and poses technical and non-technical challenges and risks.
Our IUP/ICP technology platform is designed to (1) mature and de-risk options in a step-wise fashion, (2) retain our competitive position (currently more than 300 BBO of resource under lease) in unconventional resources, and (3) progress projects to the point where a commercial FID can be achieved within 5 to 10 years of exercising an option.
The Oil Shale Team is currently progressing options in Colorado and Jordan and monitoring other global opportunities and competitor activities. In Colorado, the drilling of a multi-mineral demonstration project begins in May 2012 (21 wells, $50 - 100 MM) with pilot start-up January 2013. In Jordan, assessment drilling (2 rigs, ~80 wells/year), coring, hydrology measurements and laboratory analyses programs are underway and an ICP pilot ($25-50 MM,12 wells) is planned for 2013.
Work in support of these projects provides exposure to one of largest opportunities in the Portfolio that is in the early stages of exploration and R&D
Near term focus will be as an individual contributor working with individuals and teams across a wide spectrum of technical disciplines to design and execute approved pilot tests in Colorado and Jordan and support the planning of a commercial development
