
Encompassing the geographical region of Asia, as well as the eastern edge of Russia, the Far East boasts an abundance of energy resources. In particular, Russia's economy is driven by oil and natural gas imports, and the massive country contains proven oil reserves of some 60 billion barrels and proven natural gas reserves of 1,680 Tcf. The country's oil industry giant Gazprom is making headway, along with operator ExxonMobil, in the massive, multi-phased offshore Sakhalin project. Divided into three separate developments, Sakhalin I, II and III involves building both onshore and offshore oil and gas infrastructure offshore Russia's eastern coast. Specifically, Sakhalin II is the world's largest oil and gas project and is expected to produce 395,000 boed at its peak.
