Although Egypt houses two significant shipping routes in the MENA region for Persian Gulf oil shipments via the Suez Canal and Sumed Pipeline, the North African country is rapidly emerging as a prominent natural gas producer. Containing proven natural gas reserves of 58.5 Tcf, Egypt has increased its natural gas production by more than 30% from 1999-2007. Exploration and production is concentrated in the Nile Delta and Western Desert regions, where oil and natural gas majors BG, BP, Eni, Shell and Apache operate. Egypt will likely become one of the top gas suppliers in the Mediterranean region, with leading companies Gasco and EGAS at the helm of the country's natural gas networks.
